Tour of the Port of Hamburg

Face to face with giants – Experience 800 years of the port’s history

Join us on a journey back in time: We start our bus tour of the Port of Hamburg in the Speicherstadt warehouse district with its brick buildings from the Wilhelmine period that are listed as historic monuments and were awarded the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. We continue through the futuristic Hafencity, Europe’s biggest inner-city development project with the impressive Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The bus takes us past the last dockside storage sheds from the imperial era and over the famous Köhlbrand Bridge, from where we can enjoy views over the vast area of the Port of Hamburg, the heart of the city.

Container giants close enough to touch

Spread below us is Hamburg’s container port. Visitors are not normally allowed in – but we are! With given special permission from the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), our bus will be able to drive straight to the terminals, accompanied by an escort vehicle and flashing lights.

ArchitecTour

Hamburg – A city of contrasts

Hamburg blends modern glass and steel facades with bourgeois villas from bygone centuries. This architectural tour takes you on a journey through different eras of urban development. Our experts will explain selected current urban development projects in Hamburg in an informative and entertaining way – from a houseboat and a “house in a house” to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. One example is the Quartier 21 district, which we will explore by bus. Set in former hospital grounds, it combines brick buildings with smart new houses. The Katharinenquartier district in Hamburg’s historic city centre, on the other hand, is modelled on St. Catherine’s Church next door in terms of the materials used and the lines of sight.

HafenCity – Hamburg makes waves

To round off our “ArchitecTour” through Hamburg, the bus will take us to the HafenCity district. In 2001, a groundbreaking new quarter was established here that attracts tourists from all over the world. Among the highlights of our architectural tour of discovery through Hamburg’s HafenCity are the Elbphilharmonie concert hall built on the foundation walls of a former warehouse building, and the Unilever House with its futuristic facade.
